The Reformation Sunday has the purpose to celebrate the day in which Protestant churches remember that movement which gave a turning point not only to Christianity but to the whole of European culture, inaugurating – according to some – even a new era, modernity. Now, five hundred years later, however, modernity is in crisis, and we do not know what to do with the question underlying the Reformation. The meaning of Reformation Sunday is not to be understood as a celebration of separation or even the founding of a new church in contrast to other denominations but as a grateful and critical reflection on the central insights and events of the Reformation. Reformed Protestantism has had a significant impact on the political mentality and culture of America.
