Do you go to the dollar store or the diamond store for your faith? In other words, when there is a cost to being faithful, what is in your shopping cart? Moses finds out from God as does Peter from Jesus.
Moses thinks life is pretty good, shepherding for his father-in-law. That is, until the burning bush catches his attention. Then he finds out that God is there and God has a big idea. Really big.
Moses thinks there must be some mistake, and tries several angles to get out of this sacred assignment. God won't hear of it, and promises to be with him. The simple mission: get God's people freed from the most powerful ruler of the most powerful empire in the western world.
Peter gets a similar lesson. He must have been thinking pretty highly of himself, having come up with the right answer when Jesus asked: Who do you say that I am?
Later, when Jesus describes what's in store for him in the future, going to Jerusalem, incurring the wrath of religious authorities, getting crucified, and then rising on the third day, Peter doesn't like what he's hearing. Pulling Jesus to one side, Peter condemns such dark thoughts in Jesus.
Jesus blows up at Peter, pointing out that he has lost his sacred vision and adopted one that's faithless. "Get behind me, Satan!"
Jesus goes on to explain how the faithful disciple must lose their life in order to gain it. That's rather disturbing news since the disciples thought this would end up with them as princes in the Kingdom.
Lose one's life in order to gain it? Sounds like a high price, even if it doesn't necessarily mean dying. Make this journey in the sermon video below and note the downloads below the video panel.
