We are sharing "Stained Glass Meditations" composed by our Session (ruling) elders during Lent. They'll appear here on the web site's blog, on our Facebook page, and via blast email.
Now when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, ‘Truly this man was God’s Son!’ There were also women looking on from a distance; among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. These used to follow him and provided for him when he was in Galilee; and there were many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem.
- Mark 15:39-41
Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. - John 19:25
This is also a beautiful window. To me, this window means that Jesus died for our sins and the sins of the world.
The crucifixion was a horrible way to die. Jesus was beaten, spat upon, and a crown of thorns put on his head.
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother Mary, his mother's sister Mary, the wife of Clopas, Mary Magdalene, and John.
The lower symbol in the window has the letters INRI which is an acronym for the Latin which means, "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." The acronym is surrounded by the crown of thorns. This crown had been placed on his head by the guards in mocking contempt for his identification as Messiah in the line of Davidic kings.
The centurion's remarks indicate an understanding of Jesus' innocence and his truth as Son of God, pointing to the sinful failure to recognize God's Messiah, God's Son, and thereby crucify him.
