If you received an invitation to attend a party at the place on the left, you would probably do everything possible to attend. That's the Ballroom at Buckingham Palace, by the way. You may attend many parties in your life, but this is not something you're going to miss.
What makes this one special is the host, the royal family. What makes any party special is the host. God is our host for all of the blessings we enjoy, for our lives.
In the Exodus, we find God's difficult people turning away from Yahweh, their Deliverer from Egypt and Provider in the wilderness, and being led by the feckless Aaron into creating their own gods who they believe host a big party. Needless to say, God interrupts his meeting with Moses when the noise of the revelers reaches his ears and orders the leader to deal with the people while God stews. Moses has his hands full: an angry God, an incredibly stupid brother, and people who seem bent on their own destruction. Oy!
Jesus moves from some difficult teaching of his party's host to telling a parable of a great banquet. Awkward, but a great point about who matters to the Host of all creation.
