Following that old saw from New England, the old Yankee who was asked for directions replied, "Ya can't get theyah from heyah." So it seems as we get older and life changes. It's as if we run into roadblocks, detours, and get an implicit message not to bother any longer. That may not be right.
God was quite specific with Moses in bringing him to Mt. Nebo, telling him that this is the Promised Land before you, but you can only see it; you may not enter it. And Moses died there. In one sense at least, that seems unfortunate given all that Moses had done. Then again, had he fulfilled his mission, having served God and God's irritating people so faithfully? We have to wonder.
Paul is faced with a detour in his ministry, being blocked from proceeding according to his plan. He works it out by heeding a new vision and venturing in a whole new direction, away from Asia Minor and into Europe and on to Rome.
How we see ourselves as servants of the Lord may have been shaped by obstacles, detours, roadblocks, and handicaps, but we also need to know that God still needs our service. How we serve may need to change and adapt, just as Paul did, to meet the new circumstances we face.
