The Lord's Prayer, every Sunday. Know it by heart, right?
Last week, we learned about the prayer's revolutionary subversiveness in its first three petitions. That was a bit mind-blowing for some folks.
This week: bread. What kind of bread? This isn't so easy!
There are lots of bread stories in scripture. We take a look at the encounter of Elijah with the widow in 1st Kings 17 to recall about God's Kingdom facing down the gods' kingdom. Elijah's whole story is a confrontation between the prophet and King Ahab and Queen Jezebel who worship other gods. There are cues and clues in this story that make it clear that this is about competing claims and promises of kingdoms and their God or gods.
Now are we ready for, Give us this day our daily bread? Not if you're thinking of a whole wheat, 12 grain loaf of carbs. Not that!
Remember last week, those first three petitions in the Lord's Prayer focusing on God, God's Kingdom, and God's will? We need to be thinking of something bigger than an oven loaf. We wrestle with "Kingdom bread" and see if we can understand that.
